Anchorage to Beardstown, IL – 59 mi. Fri. Sept 23, 2022 Posted on September 23, 2022 by Blue Yonder Beautiful sunrise on the Illinois River this morning. Campgrounds along the riverfront. Vigilant on our electronics for upcoming barges. Usually very friendly captains. We radio and ask which side do they want us to pass. On the “one” which means port to port or “two” which means starboard to starboard side. Otherwise pretty quiet day. Oops! Maybe a little flooding caused this… Houses on stilts along here. Then out of nowhere we get “buzzed” by a crop duster. Having fun with us… Railroad bridge open for us! What luck. Our interesting tie -up for the night…the only place around…Logsdon Tug Service. Side-tie to their barges for $1 a foot. There are 5 of us trawlers here tonight along these barges.
At least you don’t actually have to toot the “one whistle” or the “two”! Your ears would be ringing by end of the day Reply
Nice to have radios to contact the tug captains. It is always a little nerve wracking passing these massive vessels. They know their rivers so we follow their instructions which side they want us to pass. Reply
