Coinjock, NC to Norfolk, VA 48 mi. 7 hrs.Sat. Sept 30, 2023

Left Coinjock Marina, linear docks this morning.

Cruised along beautiful marsh grass.

We had 10 bridges and one 2′ lock to navigate. This was our 1st bridge, a swinging bridge. Had to wait 15 min as bridge opened hr and half hr.

Next was a lift bridge.

This bridge and lock are syncronized. Three of us boats waited an hour for the bridge to open, delayed due to high water in the lock. The time came, the bridge opened…but the other boats were rafting together and weren’t ready in time. Just Blue Yonder went through. The other boats had to wait another hour. 🙄

Another type of lift bridge.

Cruising into Norfolk, home to the U. S. Navy.

A vessel from Singapore.

Carnival Cruise ship in the distance.

Waterside Marina, ours for the night, right in downtown Norfolk.

Carnival Cruise underway.

Whoa! Suddenly the vessel pivoted in front of our marina.

Using bow and stern thrusters, did an impressive spin…in a tight area.

Carnival Magic on its way.

Blue Yonder with Norfolk lights in the back.

2 nights here in Norfolk and then on to the Chesapeake Bay for the Kadey-Krogen Trawler Rendez-vous next week.

  1. Wow, what an interesting day! Good job being ready for the second bridge- too bad about the other 2 boats!

Neat learning your perspective on cruise ship sailing and turn maneuvering!

    Have fun downtown!

    1. Nice to enjoy Norfolk. To see the massive cruise ship pivot in front of us was impressive. We have bow and stern thrusters also and we can maneuver like that, so we do appreciate what the ship did…but we are a small vessel…

  2. Days like this one show how much you experience each day! At least 3 different bridge types and dealing with big cruise ships! then a peaceful mooring with picturesque city lights in the distance.

Way to be ready for the bridge opening!
