We enjoyed visiting the museum aboard this amazing Icebreaker. This unique shaped bow could ride above the ice. A bow propeller was below the bow to disperse the ice and keep from getting stuck. She was equipped with 6 locomotive engines in 3 engine rooms. Some of the shipwrecks on Lake Huron. Enjoyed the day seeing how the men and women of the USCG served particulatly during the winters and during WWII here near Mackinaw.

It was very interesting to read about the majestic Icebreaker Mackinac. She helped win WWII by keeping the Lakes open for shipping much needed supplies, iron, ore…
Cool. Bringing me back USCG memories. The buoy tender I was on was built in Great Lakes same time frame and did some ice breaking there before was moved to San Juan, PR. I know people loved the ice breaker Mackinaw. I think it got saved by Congress a couple of times when CG put it on chopping block
Amazing ship! Such a brave mission.
Neat learning the history of the USCG. Love the last picture with you two! 🙂
