Georgetown is the third oldest town in SC, with Charleston – 1st, and Beaufort – 2nd. Rice, lumber, indigo and cotton made this town very wealthy. There are 60 well – preserved historic homes in Georgetown.
Visited the Rice Museum. This drawing represents the rice plantation.
Also visited the Maritime Museum. Enjoyed our leisure day to visit town and prepare for Tropical Storm Orphelia’s arrival in the late evening.
Neat seeing such a historic town.
The propeller is huge! Must have been a big ship! Transoceanic crossings?
Carolina Gold rice is prized!
The propeller was from the Norwegian ship, Leif Erikkson, 1906. It was found sunk nearby Georgetown.
Carolina rice was so prized, it made So. Carolina the second richest colony in the nation, second to Massachusetts. It was a status symbol to serve Carolina rice in other parts of the world.
Neat learning about Carolina rice and how it became a status symbol!
Cool too about propeller. Wow, 1906!
Thanks, Kelsi. We went to 3 museums during our 3 nights in Georgetown during Tropical Storm Ophelia.
